Welsh & BUCS Indoors

On Saturday 28th November, eleven members of the rowing club headed over to Cardiff to take part in the Welsh and British Universities Indoors Rowing Series.

The men started off the day of racing in the Male Students Open 2k. Some great performances put in by the three Gloucestershire men in a very tough devision with some top rowers from Cardiff and Swansea University. Jack Heaver came in top of the UoG rowers with a time of 6:39 placing him 11th overall, followed by Marcus Barker and Alex Burnett.

Next up was the women with our only Senior, Florence Stevenson taking part in the Female Student Lightweight 2k. Taking an early lead in the first half of the race by 35 meters, she held it for the remainder of the race, securing a gold medal in a time of 8:09.

Finally it was time for our beginner rowers, many of which who have only rowed for seven weeks. Daniel Watt, the only male beginner from UoG, put in a great performance and just missed out on a medal  finishing in 4th place. Along side him were several female beginners who again put in some great performances. Olivia Cole, again took an early lead in which she held onto for the duration of the race, securing her a gold medal. Not too far behind Olivia was Linda Dahlström, a Swedish exchange student, who received bronze overall. Other great performances put in by the rest of the women, Harriet Jones, Kim Jacka, Alice Sharkey and Maia Davies several of which achieved a personal best in this race.

A great day of indoor racing from University of Gloucestershire Rowing. Thank you to Welsh Rowing for having us at their event, we look forward to entering again next year, hopefully to maintain our medals! Now to prepare for British Indoor in a couple of weeks time.
